The annual Watkins Glen Opening event was held this weekend at Watkins Glen International Speedway. This track, opened in 1948, is home to countless legends of open wheel, sportscar, and stock car racing and is New York’s only location for the NASCAR Spring Cup Series. The Griffin Motorwerke East Coast Team looks forward to participating in this event each year for the wonderful hospitality of the track staff and the opportunity to reunite with friends as an opening to the motorsports season.
This year, we debuted our brand new 2018 Audi S4 project car. And when I say brand new, I mean BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW.
We picked up the car Friday morning in Danbury, CT taking advantage of the route home to visit some of our dealers. What better way to break in a new car than laps around the 2.3 mile road course? A meet and greet breakfast at our local Audi Rochester dealership started off the morning. The first B9 S4 in town drew some attention, especially after an immediate install of a Roc-Euro Intake System in the dealership parking lot, since you just can’t go the track unmodified.
With the turbo breathing freely in the cool spring air, we cruised with a group of 50 cars including many from our local chapter Audi Club. The drive down saw great scenery through the Finger Lakes wine trail and countless people rolling their summer vehicles out of storage and on to the streets.Opening weekend at the Glen involves parade laps behind a pace car allowing usage of the track to all sorts of vehicles and drivers. Even with speed being regulated, it is easy to stretch the legs of your vehicle through favorite sections such as the “Boot” and “Bus Stop”. The Back Straight and Stadium Straight also offer opportunities to put the foot down.
